Olaf Wieghorst
My Favorite Olaf Wieghorst Painting of the Week

 At Bay

A five-dog pack trees a cougar, right, as two riders approach from the left. The autumn colored landscape offers a panoramic view into the background under a sparsely clouded sky. An early painting, the picture's appeal lies in its narrative content and romantic qualities. This painting is paired with a similar theme painting "A Mountain Menace."

"From a 1950s painting titled: "At Bay" - Oil on canvas, 28 x 38 inches

“Olaf Wieghorst needed some hay for his horses and did not have the money to pay for it so he told my Uncle Gene to pick out two of his paintings. Uncle Gene decided to let them hang in my Grandma and Grandpa’s house so they could enjoy them and when they passed on he would take them. Olaf Wieghorst was a neighbor of my grandparents. Olaf and John Wayne at some point came by my Grandparents’ house to look at the paintings.” Story from Pam Pethoud, Seiling, OK (niece of Eugene D. Napier.)
